First Reading
GENESIS 9:8-15
The sign of covenant

Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying:  "And as for Me, behold, I establish My covenant with you and with your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, of all that go out of the ark, every beast of the earth."  Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.  And God said: "This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:  I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.  It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.

PSALMS 24:4-9
The King of Glory and His Kingdom

He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully.  He shall receive blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.  This is Jacob, the generation of those who seek Him, who seek Your face.  Lift up your heads, O you gates!  And be lifted up, you everlasting doors!  And the King of glory shall come in.  Who is this King of glory?  The LORD strong and mighty, The LORD mighty in battle.  Lift up your heads, O you gates!  Lift up, you everlasting doors!  And the King of glory shall come in.

Second Reading
1 PETER 3:18-22
CHRIST died for our sins

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the spirit, by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison, who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.  There is also an antitype which now saves us - baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him.

Gospel Reading
MARK 1:12-15
The Kingdom of God is at hand

Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness.  And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels minisered to Him.  Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent, and believe in the gospel."

ISAIAH 43:18-19, 21-22, 24-25
I wipe out your offences

Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old.  Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it?  I will even mae a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.  This people I have formed for Myself; they shall declare My praise.  But you have not called upon Me, O Jacob; and you have been weary of Me, O Israel.  You have bought Me no sweet cane with money, nor have you satisfied Me with the fat of your sacrifices; but you have burdened Me with your sins, You have wearied Me with your inequities.  I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; and I will not remember your sins.

"The Word of the Lord"

PSALM 40:2-5, 13-14
Faith Persevering in Trial

He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps.  He has put a new song in my mouth - Praise to our God; many will see it and fear, and will trust in the LORD.  Blessed is that man who makes the LORD his trust, and does not respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.  Many, O LORD my God, are Your wonderful works which You have done; and Your thoughts toward us cannot be recounted to You in order; if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.  Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; O LORD, make haste to help me!  Let them be ashamed and brought to mutual confusion who seek to destroy my life; let them be driven backward and brought to dishonour who wish me evil.

Second Reading
2 CORINTHIANS 1:18-22

But as God is faithful, our word to you was not Yes and No.  For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among yu by us - by me, Silvanus, and Timothy - was not Yes and No, but in Him was Yes.  For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.  Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

MARK 2:1-12
Cure of a paralyzed man

And again He entered Capernaum after some days, and it was heard that He was in he house.  Immediately many gathered together, so that there was no longer room to receive them, not even near the door.  And He preached the word to them.  Then they came to Him, bringing a paralytic who was carried by four men.  And when they could not come near Him because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where He was.  So when they had broken through, they let down the bed on which the paralytic was lying.  When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic,  "Son, your sins are forgiven you.  And some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, why does this Man speak blasphemies like this?  Who can forgivesins but God alone?  But immediately, when Jesus perceived in His spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves, He said to them, "Why do you reason about these things in your hearts? "Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, "Your sins are forgiven you," or to say, "Arise, take up your head and walk"?  "But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins"  He said to the paralytic, "I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house."  Immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went out in the presence of them all, so that all were amazed and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!"

The Law Concerning Leprosy

And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: "When a man has on the skin of his body a swelling, a scab, or a bright spot, and it becomes on the skin of his body like a leprous sore, then he shall be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons the priests.  He is a leprous man.  He is unclean.  The priest shall surely pronounce him unclean; his sore is on his head.  Now the leper on whom the sore is, his clothes shall be torn and his head bare; and he shall cover his mustache, and cry, 'Unclean! Unclean!'
He shall be unclean.  All the days he has the sore he shall be unclean.  He is unclean, and he shall dwell alone; his dwelling shall be outside the camp.

The LORD a Fortress in Adversity

In You, O LORD, I put my trust;  Let me never be ashamed;  Deliver me in Your righteousness.  Bow down Your ear to me, deliver me speedily; be my rock of refuge, a fortress of defense to save me.  Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.  I am a reproach among all my enemies, but especially amng my neighbours, and am repulsive to my acquaintances; those who see me outside flee from me.

MARK 1:40-45
Jesus Cleanses a Leper

Now a leper came to Him, imploring Him, kneeling down to Him and saying to Him, "If You are willing, You can make me clean."  Then Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, "I am willing: be cleansed."  As soon as He had spoken, immediately the leprosy left him, and he was cleansed.  And He strictly warned and sent him away at once, and said to him,  "See that you say nothing to anyone; but go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing those things which Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."  However, he went out and began to proclaim it freely, and to spread the matter, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter the city, but was outside in deserted places; and they came to Him from every direction.

A Life of Hardship

Is there not a time of hard service for man on earth?  Are not his days also like the days of a hired man?  Like a servant who earnestly desires the shade, and like a hired man who eagerly looks for his wages, so I have been allotted months of futility, and wearisome nights have been appointed to me.  When I lie down, I say, "When shall I arise, and the night be ended?"  For I have had my fill of tossing till dawn.  My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope.  Oh, remember that my life is a breath!  My eye will never again see good.

PSALM 146:1-6
The Happiness of Those Whose Help Is the LORD

Praise the LORD!
Praise the LORD, O my soul!  While I live I will praise the LORD;  I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.  Do not put your trust in princess, nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help.  His spirit departs, he returns to his earth;  in that very day his plan perish.  Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps truth forever.

Duty to Preach

For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel!  For if I do this willingly, I have a reward; but if against my will, I have been entrusted with a stewardship.  What is my reward then?  That when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel of Christ without charge, that I may not abuse my authority in the gospel.  For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win the more.  To the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak.  I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.  Now this I do for the gospel's sake, that I may be partaker of it with you.

JESUS's Ministry

Now as soon as they have had come out of the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.  But Simon's wifes's mother ly sick with a fever, and they told Him about her at once.  So He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever left her.  And she served them.  At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to Him all who were sick and those who were demon-possessed.  And the whole city was gathered together at the door.  Then He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He did not allow the demons to speak, because they knew Him.  Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.  And Simon and those who were with Him searched for Him.  When they found Him, they said to Him, "Everyone is looking for You."  But He said to them, "Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also, because for this purpose I have come forth."  And He was preaching in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and casting out demons.
