Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord - Year B

First Reading
ISAIAH 50:4-7
I will not be disgraced

The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary.  He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to hear as the learned.  The Lord GOD has opened My ear and I was not rebellious, nor did I turn away.  I gave My back to those who struck Me and My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.  For the Lord GOD will help Me; therefore I will not be disgraced; therefore I have set My face like a flint, and I know that I will not be ashamed.

PSALM 21:8-9, 17-20, 23-24
The Suffering, Praise, and Posterity of the Messiah

"He trusted" in the LORD, let Him rescue Him; let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!  But You are He who took Me out of the womb; You made Me trust while on My mother's breasts.  I can count all My bones.  They look and stare at Me.  They divide My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.  But You, O LORD, do not be far from Me; O My Strength, hasten to help Me! Deliver Me from the sword, My precious life from the power of the dog.  You who fear the LORD, praise Him!  All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him, and fear Him, all you offspring of Israel!  For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; nor has He hidden His face from Him; but when He cried to Him, He heard.

Second Reading
PHILIPPIANS 2:6-11
Emptying of Jesus

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.  And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.  Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the father.

MARK 14:1-15, 47
Passion and Death

After two days it was the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread.  And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take Him by trickery and put Him to death.  But they said, "Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar of the people."  And being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came having an alabster flask of very costly oil of spikenard.  Then she broke the flask and pured it on His head.  But there were some who were indignant among themselves, and said, "Why was this fragrant oil wasted?  "For it might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor."  And they criticized here sharply.  But Jesus said, "Let her alone.  Why do you trouble her?  She has done a good work for Me.  "For you have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good; but Me you do not have always.  "She has done what she could.  She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial.  "Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her."  Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Him to them.  And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money.  So he souhgt how he might conveniently betray Him.  Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they killed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, "Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?"  And He sent out two of His disciples and said to them, "Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water, follow him.  "Wherever he goes in, say to the master of the house, "The Teacher says, "Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?"  "Then he will show you a large upper room, furnished and prepared; there make ready for us." And one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

JEREMIAH 31:31-34
A New Covenant

Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah - "not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them," says the LORD.  But this is the covenant that I will make with the hosue of Israel after those days, says the LORD:  I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.  No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD.  For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.

PSALM 50:3-4, 12-15
God the Righteous Judge

Our God shall come, and shall not keep silent; a fire shall devour before Him, and it shall be very tempestuous all around Him.  He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that He may judge His people.  If I were hungry, I would not tell you; for the world is Mine, and all its fullness.  Will I ear the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?  Offer to God thanksgiving, and pay your vows to the Most High.  Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you and you shall glorify Me.

Second Reading
HEBREW 5:7-9
He learned obedience

Who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear, though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.  And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him.

Gospel Reading
JOHN 12:20-33
Hour of Jesus

Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.  When Jesus had said these things, He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me."  Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke.  Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved.  Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke.  Then, leaning back on Jesus' breast, he said to Him, "Lord, who is it?"  Jesus answered,  "It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it."  And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.  Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him.  Then Jesus said to him, "What you do, do quickly."  But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him.  For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, "Buy those things we need for the feast," or that he should give something to the poor.  Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately.  And it was night.  So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him."  If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately.  Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, "Where I am going, you cannot come, so now I say to you."

2 CHRONICLES 36:14-16, 19-23
Exile and Return

Moreover all the leaders of the priests and the people transgressed more and more, according to all the abominations of the nations, and defiled the house of the LORD which He had consecrated in Jerusalem.  And the LORD God of their fathers sent warnings to them by His messengers, rising up early and sending them, because He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place.  But they mocked the messengers of God, despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against His people, till there was no remedy.  Then they burned the house of God, broke down the wall of Jerusalem, burned all its palaces with fire, and destroyed all its precious possessions.  And those who escaped from the sword he carried away to Babylon, where they became servants to him and his sons until the rule of the kingdom of Persia, to fulfill the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land has enjoyed her Sabbaths.  As long as she lay desolate she kept Sabbath, to fulfill seventy years.  Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and also put it in writing, saying, Thus says Cyrus king of Persia:  All the kingdoms of the earth the LORD God of heaven has given me, And He has commanded me to build Him a house at Jerusalem which is in Judah.  Who is among you of all His people?  May the LORD his God be with him, and let him go up!

PSALM 136:1-6
Thanksgiving to God for His Enduring Mercy

Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good!  For His mercy endures forever.  Oh, give thanks to the God of gods!  For His mercy endures forever.  Oh, give thanks to the Lord of lords!  For His mercy endures forever.  To him who alone does great wonders, For His mercy endures forever.  To Him who by wisdom made the heavens, For His mercy endures forever.  To Him who laid out the earth above the waters, For His mercy endures forever.

EPHESIANS 2:4-10
By grace you were saved

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.  For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.  For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Gospel Reading
JOHN 3:14-21
God sent His Son

And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believe in Him shoud not perish but have eternal life.  For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son , that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.  For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.  He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.  And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.  For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.  But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.

Ten Commandments

And God spoke all these words, saying: "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.  You shall have no other gods before Me.  You shall not make for yourself a carved image - any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them.  For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.  You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.  Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.  Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your GOD.  In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.  For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day.  Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.  Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.  You shall not murder.  You shall not commit adultery.  You shall not steal.  You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.  You shall not covet your neightbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's.

PSALM 18:8-11
God the Sovereign Savior

Smoke went up from His nostrils, and devouring fire from His mouth; coals were kindled by it.  He bowed the heavens also, and came down with darkness under His feet.  And He rode upon a cherub, and flew; He flew upon the wings of the wind.  He made darkness His secret place; His canopy around Him was dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.

1 CORINTHIANS 1:22-25

For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.  Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

JOHN 2:13-25
I will raise up this temple in 3 days

Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.  And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business.  When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changer's money and overturned the tables.  And He said to those who sold doves,  "Take these things away!  Do not make My Father's house a house of merchandise!"  Then His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up."  So the Jews answered and said to Him, "What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?"  Jesus answered and said to them,  "Destroy this temple, and in 3 days I will raise it up."  Then the Jews said, "It has taken 46 years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in 3 days?"  But He was speaking of the temple of His body.  Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them, and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said.  Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did.  But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.
