FIRST READING Acts of the Apostles 5:12-16
The numbers of men and women who came to believe in the Lord increased
steadily.
The faithful all used to meet by common consent in the Portico of Solomon. No
one else ever dared to join them, but the people were loud in their praise and the
numbers of men and women who came to believe in the Lord increased steadily.
So many signs and wonders were worked among the people at the hands of the
apostles that the sick were even taken out into the streets and laid on beds and
sleeping-mats in the hope that at least the shadow of Peter might fall across some
of them as he went past. People even came crowding in from the towns round
about Jerusalem, bringing with them their sick and those tormented by unclean
spirits, and all of them were cured.
The Word of the Lord
Responsorial Psalm Ps 117
Response Give thanks to the Lord for he is good,
for his love has no end.
or
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Let the sons of Aaron say:
‘His love has no end,’
Let those who fear the Lord say:
‘His love has no end.’ Response

has become the corner stone.
This is the work of the Lord,
a marvel in our eyes.
This day was made by the Lord;
we rejoice and are glad. Response

O Lord grant us success.
Blessed in the name of the Lord
Is he who comes.
We bless you from the house of the Lord;
The Lord God is our light. Response
SECOND READING Apocalypse 1:9-13. 17-19
I was dead and now I am to live for ever and ever.
My name is John, and through our union in Jesus I am your brother and share your
sufferings, your kingdom, and all you endure. I was on the island of Patmos for
having preached God’s word and witnessed for Jesus; it was the Lord’s day and
the Spirit possessed me, and I heard a voice behind me, shouting like a trumpet,
‘Write down all that you see in a book, and send it to the seven churches of
Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.’ I turned
round to see who had spoken to me, and when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands
and, surrounded by them, a figure like a Son of man, dressed in a long robe
tied at the waist with a golden girdle.
When I saw him, I fell in a dead faint at his feet, but he touched me with his right
hand and said, ‘Do not be afraid; it is I, the First and the Last; I am the Living One, I
was dead and now I am to live for ever and ever, and I hold the keys of death
and of the underworld. Now write down all that you see of present happenings
and things that are still to come.’
The Word of the Lord
Gospel Acclamation Jn 20: 29
Alleluia, alleluia!
Jesus said to him: ‘You believe because you can see me.
Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe.’
Alleluia!
THE GOSPEL John 20:19-31
Eight days later, Jesus came.
In the evening of that same day, the first day of the week, the doors were closed
in the room where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood
among them. He said to them, ‘Peace be with you’, and showed them his hands
and his side. The disciples were filled with joy when they saw the Lord, and he said
to them again, ‘Peace be with you.
‘As the Father sent me,
so am I sending you.’
After saying this he breathed on them and said:
‘Receive the Holy Spirit.
For those whose sins you forgive,
they are forgiven;
for those whose sins you retain,
they are retained.’
Thomas, called the Twin, who was one of the Twelve, was not with them when
Jesus came. When the disciples said, ‘We have seen the Lord’, he answered,
‘Unless I see the holes that the nails made in his hands and can put my finger into
the holes they made, and unless I can put my hand into his side, I refuse to
believe.’ Eight days later the disciples were in the house again and Thomas was
with them. The doors were closed, but Jesus came in and stood among them.
‘Peace be with you’ he said. Then he spoke to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; look,
here are my hands. Give me your hand; put it into my side. Doubt no longer but
believe.’ Thomas replied, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him:
‘You believe because you can see me.
Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe.’
There were many other signs that Jesus worked and the disciples saw, but they are
not recorded in this book. These are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus
is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing this you may have life through his
name.

EASTER SUNDAY MORNING: MASS OF THE DAY
FIRST READING Acts of the Apostles 10:34. 37-43
Peter addressed Cornelius and his household: “You must have heard about the
recent happenings in Judaea; about Jesus of Nazareth and how he began in
Galilee, after John had been preaching baptism. God had anointed him with
the Holy Spirit and with power, and because God was with him, Jesus went
about doing good and curing all who had fallen into the power of the devil.
Now I, and those with me, can witness to everything he did throughout the
countryside of Judaea and in Jerusalem itself: and also to the fact that they
killed him by hanging him on a tree, yet three days afterwards God raised him to
life and allowed him to be seen, not by the whole people but only by certain
witnesses God had chosen beforehand. Now we are those witnesses – we have
eaten and drunk with him after his resurrection from the dead – and he has
ordered us to proclaim this to his people and to tell them that God has
appointed him to judge everyone, alive or dead. It is to him that all the prophets
bear this witness: that all who believe in Jesus will have their sins forgiven through
his name.’
The Word of the Lord.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps 117
Response Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
1. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good,
for his love has no end.
Let the sons of Israel say:

2. The Lord’s right hand has triumphed;
his right hand raised me up.
I shall not die, I shall live
and recount his deeds. Response
3. The stone which the builders rejected

SECOND READING Colossians 3:1-4
Since you have been brought back to true life with Christ, you must look for the
things that are in heaven, where Christ is, sitting at God’s right hand. Let your
thoughts be on heavenly things, not on the things that are on the earth,
because you have died, and now the life you have is hidden with Christ in God.
But when Christ is revealed – and he is your life – you too will be revealed in all
your glory with him.
The Word of the Lord.
SEQUENCE
Christians, to the Paschal Victim offer sacrifice and praise.
The sheep are ransomed by the Lamb;
and Christ, the undefiled,
hath sinners to his Father reconciled.
Death with life contended: combat strangely ended!
Life’s own Champion, slain, yet lives to reign.
Tell us, Mary; say what thou didst see upon the way.
The tomb the Living did enclose;
I saw Christ’s glory as he rose!
The angels there attesting;
shroud with grave-clothes resting.
Christ, my hope, has risen; he goes before you into Galilee.
That Christ is truly risen from the dead we know.
Victorious king, thy mercy show!
Gospel Acclamation 1 Cor 5:7-8
Alleluia, alleluia!
Christ, our passover, has been sacrificed;
let us celebrate the feast then, in the Lord.
Alleluia!
THE GOSPEL John 20:1-9
It was very early on the first day of the week and still dark, when Mary of
Magdala came to the tomb. She saw that the stone had been moved away
from the tomb and came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one
Jesus loved. ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb’ she said ‘and we don’t
know where they have put him.’
So Peter set out with the other disciple to go to the tomb. They ran together, but
the other disciple, running faster than Peter, reached the tomb first; he bent
down and saw the linen cloths lying on the ground, but did not go in. Simon
Peter who was following now came up, went right into the tomb, saw the linen
cloths on the ground, and also the cloth that had been over his head; this was
not with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple
who had reached the tomb first also went in; he saw and he believed. Till this
moment they had failed to understand the teaching of scripture, that he must
rise from the dead.

PALM/PASSION SUNDAY
PROCESSION GOSPEL : Luke 19:28-40
Jesus went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. Now when he was near Bethphage and
Bethany, close by the Mount of Olives as it is called, he sent two of the disciples, telling
them, ‘Go off to the village opposite, and as you enter it you will find a tethered colt that
no one has yet ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, “Why are you
untying it?” you are to say this, “The Master needs it”.’ The messengers went off and
found everything just as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owner said,
‘Why are you untying that colt?’ and they answered, ‘The Master needs it’.
So they took the colt to Jesus, and throwing their garments over its back they helped
Jesus on to it. As he moved off, people spread their cloaks in the road, and now, as he
was approaching the downward slope of the Mount of Olives, the whole group of
disciples joyfully began to praise God at the top of their voices for all the miracles they
had seen. They cried out:
‘Blessings on the King who comes,
in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven
and glory in the highest heavens!’
Some Pharisees in the crowd said to him, ‘Master, check your disciples’, but he
answered, ‘I tell you, if these keep silence the stones will cry out’.
The Gospel of the Lord.
FIRST READING: Isaiah 50:4-7
The Lord has given me
a disciple’s tongue.
So that I may know how to reply to the wearied
he provides me with speech.
Each morning he wakes me to hear,
to listen like a disciple.
The Lord has opened my ear.
For my part, I made no resistance,
neither did I turn away.
I offered my back to those who struck me,
my cheeks to those who tore at my beard;
I did not cover my face
against insult and spittle.
The Lord comes to my help,
so that I am untouched by the insults.
So, too, I set my face like flint;
I know I shall not be shamed.
The Word of the Lord.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps 21
Response : My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
1 All who see me deride me.
They curl their lips, they toss their heads.
‘He trusted in the Lord, let him save him;
let him release him if this is his friend.’ Response
2 Many dogs have surrounded me,
a band of the wicked beset me.
They tear holes in my hands and my feet.
I can count every one of my bones. Response
3 They divide my clothing among them.
They cast lots for my robe.
O Lord, do not leave me alone,
my strength, make haste to help me! Response
4 I will tell of your name to my brethren
and praise you where they are assembled.
‘You who fear the Lord give him praise;
all sons of Jacob, give him glory.
Revere him, Israel’s sons.’ Response
SECOND READING: Philippians 2:6-11
His state was divine,
yet he did not cling
to his equality with God
but emptied himself
to assume the condition of a slave,
and became as men are;
and being as all men are,
he was humbler yet,
even to accepting death,
death on a cross.
But God raised him high
and gave him the name
which is above all other names
so that all beings
in the heavens, on earth and in the underworld,
should bend the knee at the name of Jesus
and that every tongue should acclaim
Jesus Christ as Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
The Word of the Lord.
Gospel Acclamation Phil 2: 8-9
Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory!
Christ was humbler yet,
even to accepting death, death on a cross.
But God raised him high
and gave him the name which is above all names.
Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory!
The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke
Luke: 23:1-49 (Shorter form)
The elders of the people and the chief priests and scribes rose and they brought Jesus
before Pilate.
They began their accusation by saying, ‘We found this man inciting our people to revolt,
opposing payment of the tribute to Caesar, and claiming to be Christ, a king’. Pilate put
to him this question, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ ‘It is you who say it’ he replied.
Pilate then said to the chief priests and the crowd, ‘I find no case against this man.’ But
they persisted, ‘He is inflaming the people with his teaching all over Judaea; it has come
all the way from Galilee, where he started, down to here.’ When Pilate heard this, he
asked if the man were a Galilean; and finding that he came under Herod’s jurisdiction
he passed him over to Herod who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
Herod was delighted to see Jesus; he had heard about him and had been wanting for a
long time to set eyes on him; moreover, he was hoping to see some miracle worked by
him. So he questioned him at some length; but without getting any reply. Meanwhile the
chief priests and the scribes were there, violently pressing their accusations. Then
Herod, together with his guards, treated him with contempt and made fun of him; he put
a rich cloak on him and sent him back to Pilate. And though Herod and Pilate had been
enemies before, they were reconciled that same day.
Pilate then summoned the chief priests and the leading men and the people. ‘You
brought this man before me’ he said ‘as a political agitator. Now I have gone into the
matter myself in your presence and found no case against the man in respect of all the
charges you bring against him. Nor has Herod either, since is he has sent him back to
us. As you can see, the man has done nothing that deserves death, so I shall have him
flogged and then let him go.’ But as one man they howled, ‘Away with him! Give us
Barabbas!’ (This man had been thrown into prison for causing a riot in the city and for
murder.)
Pilate was anxious to set Jesus free and addressed them again, but they shouted back,
‘Crucify him! Crucify him!’ And for the third time he spoke to them, ‘Why? What harm
has this man done? I have found no case against him that deserves death, so I shall
have him punished and then let him go’ But they kept on shouting at the top of their
voices, demanding that he should be crucified. And their shouts were growing louder.
Pilate then gave his verdict: their demand was to be granted. He released the man they
asked for, who had been imprisoned for rioting and murder, and handed Jesus over to
them to deal with as they pleased.
As they were leading him away they seized on a man, Simon from Cyrene, who was
coming in from the country, and made him shoulder the cross and carry it behind Jesus.
Large numbers of people followed him, and of women too, who mourned and lamented
for him. But Jesus turned to them and said, ‘Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for
me; weep rather for yourselves and for your children. For the days will surely come
when people will say, “Happy are those who are barren, the wombs that have never
borne, the breasts that have never suckled!” Then they will begin to say to the
mountains, “Fall on us!”; to the hills, “Cover us”. For if men use the green wood like this,
what will happen when it is dry?’ Now with him they were also leading out two other
criminals to be executed.
When they reached the place called The Skull, they crucified him there and the two
criminals also, one on the right, the other on the left. Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them;
they do not know what they are doing.’ Then they cast lots to share out his clothing.
The people stayed there watching him. As for the leaders, they jeered at him. ‘He saved
others,’ they said ‘let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.’ The
soldiers mocked him too, and when they approached to offer vinegar they said, ‘If you
are the king of the Jews, save yourself.’ Above him there was an inscription: ‘This is the
King of the Jews.’
One of the criminals hanging there abused him. ‘Are you not the Christ?’ he said. ‘Save
yourself and us as well.’ But the other spoke up and rebuked him. ‘Have you no fear of
God at all?’ he said. ‘You got the same sentence as he did, but in our case we deserved
it: we are paying for what we did. But this man has done nothing wrong. Jesus,’ he said
‘remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ ‘Indeed, I promise you,’ he replied
‘today you will be with me in paradise.’
It was now about the sixth hour and, with the sun eclipsed, a darkness came over the
whole land until the ninth hour. The veil of the Temple was torn right down the middle;
and when Jesus had cried out in a loud voice, he said, ‘Father, into your hands I commit
my spirit’ With these words he breathed his last.
(All Kneel and pause a moment)
When the centurion saw what had taken place, he gave praise to God and said, ‘This
was a great and good man.’ And when all the people who had gathered for the
spectacle saw what had happened, they went home beating their breasts.
All his friends stood at a distance; so also did the women who had accompanied him
from Galilee, and they saw all this happen.

to the glory of God the Father.
When they reached the place called The Skull, they crucified him there and the two
criminals also, one on the right, the other on the left. Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them;
they do not know what they are doing.’ Then they cast lots to share out his clothing.
It was now about the sixth hour and, with the sun eclipsed, a darkness came over the
whole land until the ninth hour. The veil of the Temple was torn right down the middle;
and when Jesus had cried out in a loud voice, he said, ‘Father, into your hands I commit
my spirit’ With these words he breathed his last.

FIRST READING: Isaiah 43:16-21
See I am doing a new deed, and I will give my chosen people drink.
Thus says the Lord,
who made a way through the sea,
a path in the great waters;
who put chariots and horse in the field
and a powerful army,
which lay there never to rise again,
snuffed out, put out like a wick:
No need to recall the past,
no need to think about what was done before.
See, I am doing a new deed,
even now it comes to light; can you not see it?
Yes, I am making a road in the wilderness, paths in the wilds.
The wild beasts will honour me,
jackals and ostriches,
because I am putting water in the wilderness
(rivers in the wild)
to give my chosen people drink.
The people I have formed for myself
will sing my praises.
The Word of the Lord.
RESONSORIAL PSALM: Ps 125 R v 3

1. When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage,
it seemed like a dream.
Then was our mouth filled with laughter,
on our lips there were songs.
Response
2. The heathens themselves said: ‘What marvels
the Lord worked for them!’
What marvels the Lord worked for us!
Indeed we were glad.
Response
3. Deliver us, O Lord, from our bondage
as streams in dry land.
Those who are sowing in tears
will sing when they reap.

carrying seed for the sowing:
they come back, they come back, full of song,
carrying their sheaves.

SECOND READING: Philippians 3:8-14
I have accepted the loss of everything if only I can have Christ
I believe nothing can happen that will outweigh the supreme advantage of knowing
Christ Jesus my Lord. For him I have accepted the loss of everything, and I look on
everything as so much rubbish if only I can have Christ and be given a place in him. I
am no longer trying for perfection by my own efforts, the perfection that comes from the
Law, but I want only the perfection that comes through faith in Christ, and is from God
and based on faith. All I want is to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and to
share his sufferings by reproducing the pattern of his death. That is the way I can hope
to take my place in the resurrection of the dead. Not that I have become perfect yet: I
have not yet won, but I am still running, trying to capture the prize for which Christ Jesus
captured me. I can assure you my brothers, I am far from thinking that I have already
won. All I can say is that I forget the past and I strain ahead for what is still to come; I
am racing for the finish, for the prize to which God calls us upwards to receive in Christ
Jesus.
The Word of the Lord.
Gospel Acclamation Amos 5:14
Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory!
Seek good and not evil so that you may live,
and that the Lord God of hosts may really be with you.
Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory!
or
Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory!
Now, now – it is the Lord who speaks –
come back to me with all your heart,
for I am all tenderness and compassion.
Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory!
GOSPEL: John 8:1-11
If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.
Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At daybreak he appeared in the Temple again; and
as all the people came to him, he sat down and began to teach them.
The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing
adultery; and making her stand there in full view of everybody, they said to Jesus,
‘Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery, and Moses has
ordered us in the Law to condemn women like this to death by stoning. What have you
to say?’ They asked him this as a test, looking for something to use against him. But
Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger. As they persisted
with their question, he looked up and said, ‘If there is one of you who has not sinned, let
him be the first to throw a stone at her.’ Then be bent down and wrote on the ground
again. When they heard this they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until
Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained standing there. He looked up and
said,
‘Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?’ ‘
No one, sir’ she replied.
‘Neither do I condemn you,’ said Jesus ‘go away, and don’t sin any more.’
