Pentecost Sunday marks the end of the Easter season and celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the Virgin Mary. Pentecost marks the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles. For that reason, it is often called the "the birthday of the Church."

ACTS 2:1-11
ACTS 2:1-11
1 In my earlier work,
Theophilus, I dealt with everything Jesus had done and taught from the
beginning
2 until the day he gave
his instructions to the apostles he had chosen through the Holy Spirit, and was
taken up to heaven.
3 He had shown himself
alive to them after his Passion by many demonstrations: for forty days he had
continued to appear to them and tell them about the kingdom of God.
4 While at table with
them, he had told them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for what the
Father had promised. 'It is', he had said, 'what you have heard me speak about:
5 John baptised with
water but, not many days from now, you are going to be baptised with the Holy
Spirit.'
6 Now having met
together, they asked him, 'Lord, has the time come for you to restore the
kingdom to Israel?'
7 He replied, 'It is
not for you to know times or dates that the Father has decided by his own
authority,
8 but you will receive
the power of the Holy Spirit which will come on you, and then you will be my
witnesses not only in Jerusalem but throughout Judaea and Samaria, and indeed
to earth's remotest end.'
9 As he said this he
was lifted up while they looked on, and a cloud took him from their sight.
10 They were still
staring into the sky as he went, when suddenly two men in white were standing
beside them,
11 and they said, 'Why
are you Galileans standing here looking into the sky? This Jesus who has been
taken up from you into heaven will come back in the same way as you have seen
him go to heaven.'

PSALMS 104:1, 24,
29-31, 34
1 Bless Yahweh, my
soul, Yahweh, my God, how great you are! Clothed in majesty and splendour,
24 How countless are
your works, Yahweh, all of them made so wisely! The earth is full of your
creatures.
29 Turn away your face
and they panic; take back their breath and they die and revert to dust.
30 Send out your breath
and life begins; you renew the face of the earth.
31 Glory to Yahweh for
ever! May Yahweh find joy in his creatures!
34 May my musings be
pleasing to him, for Yahweh gives me joy.
Second Reading
ROMANS 8:8-17
8 and those who live by
their natural inclinations can never be pleasing to God.
9 You, however, live
not by your natural inclinations, but by the Spirit, since the Spirit of God
has made a home in you. Indeed, anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ
does not belong to him.
10 But when Christ is in
you, the body is dead because of sin but the spirit is alive because you have
been justified;
11 and if the Spirit of
him who raised Jesus from the dead has made his home in you, then he who raised
Christ Jesus from the dead will give life to your own mortal bodies through his
Spirit living in you.
12 So then, my brothers,
we have no obligation to human nature to be dominated by it.
13 If you do live in
that way, you are doomed to die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the
habits originating in the body, you will have life.
14 All who are guided by
the Spirit of God are sons of God;
15 for what you received
was not the spirit of slavery to bring you back into fear; you received the
Spirit of adoption, enabling us to cry out, 'Abba, Father!'
16 The Spirit himself
joins with our spirit to bear witness that we are children of God.
17 And if we are
children, then we are heirs, heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, provided
that we share his suffering, so as to share his glory.

Gospel Reading
JOHN 14:15-16, 23-26
15 If you love me you
will keep my commandments.
16 I shall ask the
Father, and he will give you another Paraclete to be with you for ever,
23 Jesus replied: Anyone
who loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we shall come
to him and make a home in him.
24 Anyone who does not
love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not my own: it is
the word of the Father who sent me.
25 I have said these
things to you while still with you;
26 but the Paraclete,
the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you
everything and remind you of all I have said to you.
